If you spend hours scrolling through home decor reels on Instagram and your Pinterest is filled with pictures of aesthetic interiors, it means you are adulting. The day you move into your own space, you get the freedom to decorate it with anything and everything you’ve ever wanted. It could be something as simple as a photo wall or as big as a lounge chair. It becomes your sanctuary, a place to turn to after an exhausting day at work. Sitting under the dim fairy lights binging on your favorite Netflix show has the power to turn your mood around, making you feel better.

The art of home decor allows you to create a space where you can find solace, no matter what’s going on in your life. The way you adorn your house speaks volumes about your personality. For instance, as an introvert, you might set up a coffee table near your bookshelves to enjoy books at leisure. And if you are an extrovert who likes to have people over, you might try to make the place accommodating for others, like adding more chairs or cushions. Also, who doesn’t love compliments?

Spicing up your boring old house design can uplift your spirits. It affects your mental health and well-being. It adds a real homely feel to the place and helps you relax. Even the color scheme you choose and the plants you put around the house can cheer you up.

How: Set a couch in your living room. It could be a second-hand sofa you bought at a thrift store or a spare from your parent’s house. Remember, home decor is not always about expensive or fancy Ikea furniture. Place a throw blanket on the couch for you to have a hot cup of coffee there every morning. It’s a relaxing feeling, isn’t it?

There was a time when we used to come home just to sleep, but now, thanks to the pandemic, we have to stay in 24x7. Shots of your work-from-set up with a cute plant in the corner have taken over pictures of fancy vacations and club hopping on the weekends. Believe it or not, the decor at your house affects your productivity at work.

How: Rather than working from the bed, invest in some work from home furniture. A table with cabinets and a comfy chair to keep your back straight at work. As we’ve said earlier, add a cute plant on the side, a fancy calendar, or a notebook to note down your tasks for the day. Even a lamp would add to the aesthetics of your room and inspire you to work. It will increase your focus, thereby improving your workplace productivity.

When it comes to home decor, how can we forget the heart of the house, the kitchen? Your house is a reflection of who you are. The clutter says you are a laid-back person, while a clean kitchen is a signifier of an immaculate and elegant person. It’s okay if you don’t believe in appearances. But a little makeover never hurts. It can change the whole vibe of your kitchen, and who knows might inspire you to cook more often rather than depending on takeouts.

Solution: Place small flower pots near your kitchen window. You can color them in different colors to make them look pleasing. Once you start traveling again, bring back magnets to place on your refrigerator. Also, you can change the lighting in the kitchen.

As humans, we are hard-wired to resist change, but a change in our house design and decor seldom evokes negative emotions. This change doesn’t have to come from knocking down the walls. Sometimes a few home decor items can turn the place around, even better than a full-fledged renovation could have done. It can make your home stand out and make it your sanctuary you’d never want to leave. The only thing to remember is to be as creative as possible.
